HOW TO MELT GELATINE

Sprinkle 1 tbsp gelatin over 1/4th cup water (or as the recipe requires). Let stand for 5 minutes. Microwave for 30 seconds. Stir well with a spoon. Or alternatively, you may heat it in a heavy bottomed saucepan over low heat till it melts. Cool it and then use in individual recipes.

Substitute for gelatin.
Many strict vegetarians may not eat gelatin. You may substitute it for unflavoured China Grass (Agar Agar).  10 gms China Grass should be melted in 1 1/2 cups water. In a heavy bottomed saucepan heat water over low flame. Make pieces of China Grass and add to it. Stir in between till it melts.  Use while still warm in individual recipes (or else it will set).  Keep the dish to set in  the refrigerator.

Substitution 2 tsps gelatine = 5 gms China Grass
